Carbon capture is an important measure to reduce carbon emissions by sequestration for industrial use or storage, therefore eliminating it from the atmosphere. With the current technology, carbon capture is the only viable solution for decarbonizing many industries, specifically the cement and waste treatment industries. In terms of carbon offset, carbon capture will play a significant role in the operations of power generation and heavy industry.
The implementation of carbon capture technologies will result in an increased need for infrastructure supporting off and on-loading of Co₂ Companies need to start looking at innovative technologies in order to successfully mitigate the environmental impact of Co₂ when refitting industries towards a sustainable future.
Canaf Energy's IQuay is adapted to safely transfer Co₂ between an onshore or floating storage facility and a Co₂ carrier. With this innovative transport system Co₂ can be exported from industrial production facilities; imported for purposes of industrial use; or distributed for purposes of sequestration.
In areas where the geology of underground formations is not suitable for storage, transport infrastructure is required to transport the captured Co₂ for utilization or storage elsewhere. Smart and flexible infrastructure allows small scale carbon capture profitable without the need for Co₂ import via trucks or constructing time and resources intensive jetties for Co₂ import via ships.
The IQuay can be scaled according to a project’s need, enabling the carbon capture and utilisation value chain.
For some clients, especially industrial sites looking towards capturing and temporarily storing Co₂ for export, space restriction can be a barrier for committing to carbon reduction measures. In such instances the use of a storage barge connected by the IQuay transfer system will be a key enabler.
A floating storage system allows for a high degree of flexibility and can be deployed quickly and without the environmental impact of building conventional marine infrastructure.
Co₂ export from carbon capture facilities is a new market segment with promising potential in the fight against climate change. Currently, projects utilise known technology and procedures from the existing commercial Co₂ distribution market, but also look at new developments related to reduced storage and transportation conditions. It is important that the export facility has the flexibility to accommodate these new developments.
There are two pathways for captured Co₂. The first is to feed the current and evolving commercial market that uses Co₂ in the manufacturing process of their end product, also called carbon utilization. The second is to remove the Co₂ from the value chain by permanently storing it in geological reservoirs, commonly known as carbon storage.
Both pathways will require an import facility if not already in place, to accommodate a large range of vessels. Offshore services will play an important role in carbon utilization and CCS, and shipment of Co₂ will be crucial in the safe transportation between facilities.total cost of decarbonizing the power sector.
The IQuay is designed for flexibility to accommodate a wide range of Co₂ import and export applications.
